What is roulette?

Roulette is a casino game played using a numbered wheel and a ball. The wheel and the ball are spun in opposite sides and players bet on where the ball will come to rest when the wheel comes to a stop. Sounds quite simple, really. However, the numbering of the wheel and the independence of each round of play make it difficult to predict any outcome. It’s such a complex try that claims abide that even Einstein ruled out any mathematical formula of winning at roulette. That said, it is not to say there is no chance of getting better at roulette. Rather than get hang up on the details, we look at the best playing tips with greater focus. The roulette wheel has either 37 (0-36) or 38 (0-36 and a 00) numbered divisions. There are pockets alongside each number where the ball ends its journey in every round.

Types of roulette

Roulette is categorized into groups: The French/European Roulette and the American Roulette. The major difference between the two is the number of divisions on the wheel. The French/European version has a single zero which means it has a total of 37 divisions. The American wheel, on the other hand, has a zero and a double zero, totalling up to 38 divisions. This difference significantly affects the house advantage between the two wheels. The number on either wheel are further categorized into two. There are low numbers (0-18) and high numbers (19-36). These sets of numbers are randomly distributed around the wheel. For distinction of slots, numbers appear on alternate red and black segments. The zeroes appear on a green segment.

How to play roulette

Roulette is a game of chance (probability) and the odds of each occurrence depend on its probability. The playing process is simply the act of players placing a bet then having the croupier spin the wheel and the ball. During each round of play, there are a number of bets that players can wager on. The bets are generally divided into inside and outside bets.

Inside bets

These are the bets that are placed on the numbers. You could pick a specific winning number on the wheel. Additionally, a bet can be placed on a combination of numbers. Inside betting options include:

Straight – This, like a money line, is making a bet on one specific outcome. A bettor picks a winning number and places a wager on it.

Split –This is a bet on two adjacent numbers being in the winning realm. In a casino, the betting chip is placed on the common line between the two numbers.

Street – in the literal meaning of the word ‘street,’ this bet is a choice of several numbers on a line.

Six line – This is a bet placed on two adjacent lines by laying the betting chip the lines’ common outer corner.

Trio – This is a choice of three numbers with a zero or zeroes being part of the outcome.

Corner – this bet encompasses four numbers with a chance of appearing when the ball comes to a stop.

Basket – A bet on the numbers 0, 1, 2 and three

Outside bets

These are bets that are placed on other occurrences other than actual numbers.
These could be odd/even numbers, etc. Such bets include:

Red/Black – Picking the colour on which the ball ends up

Odd/Even – Bet on the even or odd occurrence of numbers

High/Low – Bet on whether the ball will end up on 0-18 or 19-36.

Columns – The wheel has three columns from which one can pick the resultant outcome

Dozens – 36 (three sets of 12). Pick which single set will produce the winner.

Besides inside/outside bets, there are bets that are specific to particular roulette types. The Snake Bet, for example, is a bet that picks numbers forming the shape of a snake. It can be sub-divided into red and black snakes.
French roulette also has special bets like the Neighbours of zero. This bet has players picking the side of zero on which the ball will end up.

Roulette online playing tips and strategy

Opt for a French or European style casino
Whether you are playing in an online or land based casino, always go for the French or European version. The use of a single zero in these version makes them much better than the American version which has double zeroes. While the French/European wheels carry a house edge of 2.7%, the American wheel has a whopping 5.26% house edge. This means that, in the long run, you are likely to lose more money in the American version.
Many casinos will try to lure you to the American version with better odds. Do, not, however, be tricked; stick to the classic version of roulette at all times.

Online casinos any day
The welcome bonus is always a great reason to play online rather than going to a physical house. It combines with individual comfort to give online casinos a landslide win. When it comes to roulette, however, there is even more reason to avoid the brick-and-mortar gaming houses.
The software in the online versions eliminates some human-capability errors that might occur in a physical casino. For instance, you are pretty sure that the wheel will spin at the same speed in a software-aided casino. The same cannot be guaranteed on land. Thus, playing roulette gives you even more reason to play online.

Adopt a strategy
While roulette is a pure probability game, having a strategy will at least help you manage your bankroll. You can use a progressive or non-progressive strategy. These strategies help plan beforehand what to do in the event of a loss in one or several rounds.
The Fibonacci and martingale strategies are most popular with progressive bettors. They advocate increasing your wager after every loss to ensure you recover your full amount when you finally win. The rate of raising varies from one progressive strategy to another.
The James Bond strategy is non-progressive and advocates for the same wager in every bet. Although it does not guarantee recoup o losses, it ensures you keep your losses in check. It anchors its model on the possibility of more wins than losses.
While the above strategies won’t affect your winning chances, they are a great way to keep your betting in control.
